Just Moved In? Make Yourself at Home!

by The Hat Team

Congratulations! You’ve just moved into your new house! It’s exciting, but it’s also a huge transition. It takes time to make a new house feel like home. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • BE ACTIVE

If you have moved to a new area where you do not know anyone, you may be tempted to isolate yourself. After all, you have unpacking to do and maybe a new job to start. But try to resist that temptation. Staying socially, physically, and communally active, triggers significant feelings that create the sense of home. Join a gym or exercise class, join a community such as a church, the school PTA or a book club, and shop locally to get to know your surroundings.

  • SURROUND YOURSELF WITH LIVING THINGS

A move can be difficult, especially if you are grieving the place you left. It’s not uncommon for people to become depressed after moving to a new home. Combat those feelings by cultivating relationships with living things. Start a garden, spend time with your children and pets or volunteer in the community. Step out of your comfort zone…you will be glad you did!

  • COMFORT YOURSELF WITH COLORS

Decorate with a palette of colors that lift your mood. Choose colors that promote calm, happy feelings. For example, earth tones create a welcoming, comfortable atmosphere that evokes feelings stability, reassurance, and ease, while light pastel colors stimulate feelings of peacefulness, calm and cleanliness.

  • SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THE FAMILIAR

Even before you are completely settled into your home, placing familiar items such as family pictures and heirlooms in your new space can make it feel more like you. Even if you don’t hang your art right away, take it out of boxes and lean it against walls so that you can still enjoy it until you find time to place it where you want it. Some other ways to make you feel at home: cook favorite meals, burn candles with favorite scents and/or play your favorite music.

  • UNPACK

This may seem obvious, but it’s not unusual for people to still have boxes cluttering the house months after moving in. Take your belongings out of the boxes right away and begin decorating and arranging furniture. Start with your closets and dressers so that you will be able to find the things you need easily in order to set up the rest of your house. The sooner you do this, the sooner this once strange place will feel like home!

Planning the Perfect Staycation!

by The Hat Team

With gas prices at an all-time high and everything in general being more expensive right now, many families will be staying close to home this summer. But that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on your “summer vacation”. Just turn it into a fabulous staycation! There is a plethora of benefits to a staycation. Not only will you save money on travel and accommodation expenses, but you will have the comfort of your own bed at night…and BONUS…no packing! And with your savings, you can spend more money on activities. Just set a budget for your staycation including the costs for groceries, entertainment and activities and you are on your way to a fun family adventure that won’t break the bank!

Check out these ideas for planning the perfect staycation:

  • PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME

If you are taking time off work to spend a week together as a family, don’t wait until that time starts to think of what you want to do. Get any chores done before your staycation starts so that you don’t have to worry about them during our time off. Create an itinerary for your time together. It doesn’t have to be written in stone…you can always change things up if you want to. What you want to avoid is wasting time each day trying to figure out what everyone wants to do.

  • HAVE A VACATION MIND SET

Yes…you are home. But YOU ARE ON VACATION. That will mean different things for different people. Some might want vacations where they are up and at ‘em first thing every morning and going on one adventure after another. Other people might think a true vacation is sleeping in every morning and not having to wake to an alarm. Whatever the case may be…be sure to make your vacation time different from a normal week at home.

  • VISIT OTHER COUNTRIES…VIRTUALLY

Choose a country you would like to visit and revolve your day around it. Watch a show about the place you would like to visit, play music from that country, and cook traditional meals from there. If there are restaurants in your area that serve foods from the country you choose, check them out!

  • GO BACKYARD CAMPING

Set up a tent in your backyard (weather permitting) and camp out at home. Do all the things you might do if you went camping somewhere else. Go on a nature hike, have a campfire and make s’mores, play outdoor games and sleep overnight in the tent!

  • HOLD A THEMED MOVIE NIGHT

Whether there is a new movie you all want to see, or if there is an old movie you all love and want to revisit, make it more fun by having a themed movie night. Create snacks, décor and costumes that go along with the theme of the film. Or take it a step further and hold a “Hollywood” premier. Dress up in your finest and walk the red carpet with “paparazzi” snapping photos. Turn your kitchen counter into a movie theater snack bar with popcorn, candy and drinks. Cue up the movie and enjoy a spectacular event at home!

  • HAVE A FAMILY GAME NIGHT

Choose some board games that will be fun for the whole family. Try several different games and have a little tournament to determine the “grand champion”.

  • EAT OUT OR ORDER IN

Use some of the money you saved by not traveling to eat out or order food in for the entire staycation! Who wants to cook and clean while on vacation? Have easy options for breakfast and lunch and then choose a restaurant for dinner each night. Take this time to try some new places you haven’t been to before just to spice things up a bit. Also…enjoy treats that you might not normally have during a regular week. You’re on vacation!

  • GO FOR A FAMILY HIKE OR BIKE RIDE

If it’s nice outside, gather the family and find a local trail where you can go biking or hiking (or both). Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy nature without having to venture far from home.

  • CHECK OUT “THINGS TO DO” IN YOUR HOMETOWN

Often, when you live somewhere, you don’t take advantage of all the tourist opportunities there are there. If you’re planning a staycation, it’s a good time to check out what your local area has to offer. You might be surprised to find all the things there are to do close to home. Go online and search “things to do in Montgomery” and see what you find. You might even discover special events that are happening the week of your staycation.

  • SPEND ONE NIGHT AT A LOCAL HOTEL WITH A POOL

If you don’t have your own pool, this will be a real treat for you and your kids! Splurge for early check-in and late check-out so you can spend as much time as possible having family fun at the pool!

  • HAVE A LAZY DAY

Save this one for the end of the week. After you have been on the go for several days, a lazy day might be just what you need to relax and rejuvenate before you go back to “normal” life. Sleep in, stay in your pajamas, read, watch tv, and definitely order food to be delivered. Just kick back and enjoy!

Your family may be disappointed that you aren’t going AWAY on a vacation this year, but with a well-planned staycation, there is a lot of fun and adventure to be had!

Getting Prepared for Major Weather Events

by The Hat Team

It’s hurricane season folks, and while Montgomery is in a very low risk hurricane zone, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared should a major weather event occur. This year the NOAA predicts an above normal Atlantic Hurricane Season thanks to ongoing La Niña and above-average Atlantic temperatures. Having your hurricane supplies ahead of time will save you from having to fight the crowds at stores right before a storm hits. And some of these items will be useful on average stormy, summer nights as well.

Your HURRICANE KIT should contain the following:

  • Flashlights & extra bulbs
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Battery-operated lanterns
  • Batteries (in different sizes)
  • Matches
  • First Aid kit
  • Duct Tape
  • Rain gear
  • Clock (wind-up or battery-powered)
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Fire extinguisher
  • Scissors
  • Can opener
  • Clean clothes
  • Extra blankets
  • Heavy gloves

Have non-perishable food for each person for 3-7 days in two coolers (one for food and one for drinks) with the following:

  • Bottled water (1 gallon/person/day)
  • Canned foods
  • Bottled juice
  • Dry pet food (make sure to include water for your pets)

House Checklist:

  • Remove outdoor items
  • Trim dead branches from trees
  • Board up windows
  • Fill gas tanks and extra containers
  • Have extra cash on hand
  • Move furniture away from windows
  • Store important documents in waterproof containers
  • Have extra supply of medicines on hand

Medical Needs:

  • Medical-alert tags
  • Insect-repellent sprays
  • Feminine hygiene items
  • Sunscreen
  • Soap
  • First Aid kit
  • Prescription medicine
  • Over-the-counter medication
  • Bandages
  • Adhesive tape
  • Antiseptic solution
  • Thermometer
  • Tweezers

Prepare your pets:

  • Water for pets for 3-7 days
  • Non-perishable pet food
  • Crate/carrier/tank
  • Leash
  • Collar or harness
  • Favorite toy
  • Blanket or pillow
  • Clean litter box
  • Updated shots and medical records
  • Microchip and contact information
  • Any medications
  • Calming aids
  • Tags
  • Puppy training pads
  • Heartworm preventatives
  • Rain gear

Hopefully you will never have to use your Hurricane Kit but being prepared for severe weather will give you peace of mind knowing that you are ready should such an event occur.

Prepare for a Quick Move if Your House Sells Fast

by The Hat Team

With the way houses are selling so quickly these days, chances are you might need to move out sooner than you thought. And let’s face it, no matter how prepared you think you are, moving is stressful. One of the worst parts of moving is packing up your current house. You are probably busy enough already, and now you are adding this huge task to your “to do” list. It can be overwhelming. One way to make it a little easier is to spread it out over several weeks instead of trying to do it all right before you move. It is a good idea to prepare for your move even before you put your house on the market.

Here is a guideline for packing for a move:

  • PRE-PACKING - If you are planning to put your home on the market soon, it’s a good time to pre-pack items that you won’t need or use before you move. Out of season clothing, tools and small appliances, and collectibles/knick-knacks are items that you won’t miss, and you can get them out of the way.
  • BOX UP NON-ESSENTIALS - Among the items that you didn’t pre-pack, choose those that you know you likely won’t need before moving. Books, extra linens, and kitchen items can be packed up because you likely won’t be doing much reading, and you only need enough linens, plates, and utensils for the number of people living in the home.

  • TIME TO GET SERIOUS - Once your house is on the market, it is time to really start paring down the amount of “stuff” still in your home. If you have children, allow them to choose a few toys/games to keep out, and pack up the rest. If you have a home office, clean it out and box up what you plan to take with you. Jewelry and shoes that you don’t wear daily can go as well. Simply label everything well so you can find items you might want or need if your house doesn’t sell as quickly as you thought it would.

  • IF OFFERS ARE COMING IN - Now it is time to pack up all but the few things you will need to get through the last few weeks at your current home. The rest of your clothes and kitchen items can go (leaving yourself what you will need until the move, of course).  Go through your medicine cabinet and toss any expired medications. Pack the rest except for the ones you take daily. If you accept an offer and the financing goes through quickly, you may be closing and moving soon!

  • MOVING IS IMMINENT - At this point the stress might reach maximum levels, but if you have been packing a bit each week, you should be almost finished! Box up your electronics (in their original packaging when possible), bathroom items, and any miscellaneous items that are left. Keep a box for essential items that you will keep with you as you are moving.
  • MOVING DAY: IT’S HERE! - All that should be left is furniture and appliances.  Whether you have hired movers to load the large items or you are doing it yourself, it will be so much more manageable with everything else already boxed up and ready to go.

IMPORTANT TIP: Label every box.  You can either write what is in the box or what room the box should go to. Or both. You will be glad you did when you are unpacking!

Remember that this is simply a general guideline.  You should do what is right for you and your family when it comes to packing and moving. But hopefully this will make what can be a trying and overwhelming time a little more pleasant.

Memorial Day: A Brief History

by The Hat Team

Many people look forward to Memorial Day weekend.  It has become the unofficial beginning of the summer vacation season and a much-appreciated long weekend for some people after a long winter and spring. The three-day weekend provides the opportunity to “celebrate” the whole time with picnics, parties, and family gatherings.  But the truth is, Memorial Day is a solemn “holiday”.

Here is a brief history of how Memorial Day came to be:

This American holiday is observed annually on the last Monday of May to honor the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  It was originally called “Decoration Day” when it was begun in the years following the Civil War. It became an official federal holiday in 1971.

The Civil War, which ended in the spring of 1865, claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history.  Because of this, the country’s first national cemeteries were established.  By the late 1860s, Americans in many towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to the fallen soldiers. They decorated their graves with flowers and recited prayers.

Waterloo, NY was designated the birthplace of Memorial Day because beginning on May 5, 1866, it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated graves with flowers and flags.

The leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, General John A. Logan, decided on May 5, 1868, that “The 30th of May 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land.” He called it Decoration Day and chose the date because it did not coincide with the anniversary of any particular battle.

General James Garfield spoke at Arlington National Cemetery on the first Decoration Day, where 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.

Decoration Day gradually became known as Memorial Day. While it originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War, after WWI, the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars. It continued to be observed annually on May 30th for decades, but in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to establish Memorial Day as the last Monday in May so that there could be a three-day weekend for federal workers. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

So, while it’s great to have a long weekend, and fun to celebrate the unofficial start of summer vacation season, take some time this Memorial Day to remember and honor those who lost their lives to save our freedom.
